Thirteen

I woke up the next morning, surprised to find myself in my own bed and that I’d fallen asleep at some point. I assumed Gideon must have woken in the night and moved me there since he was asleep beside me. At least now I knew for certain that he was okay.

Freya jumped onto the bed, and I patted the quilt over my stomach, inviting her to join me for a snuggle. I’d closed Meowkins for Mabon that day and relished the idea of having a lazy morning.

Our movements must have been enough to rouse Gideon because he groaned and rolled in my direction. The sight of a deep black bruise beneath one of his eyes caused me to suck in a surprised breath, which unfortunately startled Freya enough that she scrambled away, leaving a long scratch on my arm as she did.

I winced in pain, and Gideon slowly opened his eyes to focus on me. I put my hand over my mouth to keep from gasping. Not only was the area around his eye as dark as the devil’s soul, but his poor eye was bloodshot, leaving most of the white in his eye bright red.

He frowned and asked in a groggy voice. “What?”

I kept my hand over my mouth, having no idea how to respond.

“What?” he asked in a clearer voice. “What’s wrong?”

I slowly slid my hand from my mouth toward my eye, lightly touching the area beneath it with my fingertips. “You…you have a…black eye.”

I couldn’t have understated it more if I’d tried.

He lifted his finger to his eye and gently touched it. “This one?”

I nodded.

He must have hit a tender spot because he squeezed his eyes in pain.

I lifted a hand. “I can fix it. I promise. It’s kind of bad, but I know a spell.”

He snorted. “What did you do to me while I was passed out?”

I shook my head in response. “Nothing. You must have hit it when you fell from your chair.”

He climbed from the bed and strode to the mirror in our room. A curse flew from his mouth. “I knew it would steal my energy, but this surprises me.”

He turned to me, wearing only his boxer briefs, and I was stunned for the millionth time over how handsome he was. He grinned. “I kind of like it. Makes me look tough.”

I dropped my jaw in horror. “No. Oh, no. You can’t go to my mother’s house today looking like that. It’s far too easy to fill her head with ideas and conclusions. We don’t want to add to that.”

He chuckled and made his way back to me, drawing me into his arms.

Freya jumped onto the bed, too, but I gave her a look that said she’d missed her chance to snuggle with me. I lifted my gaze to Gideon, shocked again by his dark bruise. “Do you remember everything that happened last night? You obviously hit your head pretty hard.”

His content expression dropped into a frown. “I remember.”

I didn’t want to ruin our lovely Mabon Day mood, but I had to talk about what he’d seen.
